Homemade Chest Vapor RubEveryone in our household has asthma. It’s well-controlled for all of us, but it does mean that when we get sick, it always ends up in the chest. Coughs galore for weeks on end. This happened at the top of the month with my daughter, whose asthma was ignored when we went into the doc initially. Now she’s back on oral steroids (briefly), and I’m doing my best to keep her from being overloaded with meds as they struggle to strengthen her lungs.

DIY Lavender-Rosemary Laundry Detergent (How to Make an Effective All-Natural Laundry Powder)

Eureka: DIY Dishwasher Detergent… a new and improved recipe!

dec1_2013 023Over the holidays, I managed to finally put together a batch of homemade dishwasher detergent that works perfectly with my new dishwasher!

As you may have already read, the old version worked great with my old washer… but every machine is different, and so I had to come up with a slightly altered formula to yield better performance now that our kitchen remodel is complete.

DIY Toothpaste Recipe: Homemade Natural Toothpaste (or… How to Never Buy Toothpaste Again)

In an effort to simplify things this year, we got rid of our cable and instead decided to rely on a combo of local stations and our Netflix streaming account. With this shift came a slew of documentary watching… which led to a string of behavior changes in the last year or so.

One among them was our decision to try and minimize the number of products we use (cleaning and otherwise) that contain harmful chemicals by making our own. And thus began a journey that has led to all manner of experimentation, including homemade toothpaste, face wash, laundry powder, dishwasher detergent, hand soap, bar soap, etc.
