Make Your Own DIY All-Natural Vapor Chest Rub for Coughs!

Homemade Chest Vapor RubEveryone in our household has asthma. It’s well-controlled for all of us, but it does mean that when we get sick, it always ends up in the chest. Coughs galore for weeks on end. This happened at the top of the month with my daughter, whose asthma was ignored when we went into the doc initially. Now she’s back on oral steroids (briefly), and I’m doing my best to keep her from being overloaded with meds as they struggle to strengthen her lungs.

How to Make Your Own Laundry Soap: Homemade Natural Coconut Laundry Soap Recipe

Homemade Coconut Laundry SoapOne of the most exciting things about our transition to become a more non-toxic and chemical-free household has been learning to make soap. It’s one of those things that – for me, at least – was super scary at first. Like jumping out of an airplane or off a cliff (you can see the bottom but have no idea how long the ride will take). I entered into it with a lot of excitement and trepidation… and it has become something I truly love.

It still scares me a little. Like teaching or performing or running a workshop. There’s a wiggly-tummy feeling and a bit of anxiety that I get before I begin but ultimately know will pass. I consider it a healthy fear. It keeps me alert in the process, and it serves as a good reminder that I need to be as careful as possible.

DIY Whitening Rinse Recipe: Simple Homemade Whitening Mouthwash

DIY Whitening MouthwashI am an avid tea drinker… some might even say I am addicted to tea. (Some do.) I drink it all day, at all times of the year. I love it.

Unfortunately (and I found this out the hard way), it stains just as bad as coffee. I have experienced a long string of dental hygienists who looked into my mouth and sighed—dispirited by the long, difficult task that lay before them.

Thankfully, my current hygienist (who is awesome) recommended a trick to help significantly decrease staining and buildup. She actually recommended two options… but I latched onto the one that was the simplest and least chemical-laden.

DIY Deodorant Recipe + Pros/Cons of 3 Natural Deodorant Options

At work...Homemade deodorant was one of those hurdles I balked at when taking on making my own non-toxic personal care products. I guess I was convinced there was no way it would work. Or it would feel funny. Or stain my clothes. Or be too hard.

Luckily, I was wrong on all counts! I started experimenting with natural deodorants after seeing the film Chemerical and seeing continued suggestions that the aluminum found in most store-bought deodorants may be linked to Alzheimer’s Disease. (Not to mention other potentially dangerous chemicals like parabens, pthalates, and SLS.)

5 Green + Easy Resolutions for the New Year

Green ManHappy New Year everyone! I’ve been a bit MIA with all the crazy weather, canceled schooldays, and general household-type-busy-minutia (with a few unexpected mini-crises thrown in).

To kick things off as I get back in the routine of posting regularly, I thought I’d share a few thoughts on some of the most significant things you can do to help green things up this year. Most of these ideas not only save you money, but they also ensure you have a less toxic home, an increased amount of self-sufficiency, and are actively engaged in planetary stewardship through sustainable efforts.

All of which should make for a pretty rewarding 2014!

Homemade Slow-Cooker Chex Mix Recipe (just in time for the holidays!)

Slow Cooker Chex MixI have this little addiction to chex mix. I blame my mother. She makes the most glorious, amazing chex mix in the world. My husband is now hooked as well… with our daughter close behind.

And, like many things that come from my childhood, part of the magic of the chex mix is that someone else makes it for me. It is a gift. A special treat. Something that only happens once a year (we get a big batch at Christmas) – so that we can savor it fully and then pine after it for another 11 months.

How to Make Your Own Soap: All-Natural Castile Olive Oil Bar Soap Recipe

dec1_2013 005I never – and I do mean never – expected I would be making my own soap. I always assumed the ingredients were too caustic, the process too difficult, and the whole shebang just too darn hard.

Thankfully, I was quite wrong.
